Crazy Train: A Quilt for Mom
Some quilts are made because you fall in love with a fabric collection. Some are made because you want to learn a new technique. And some are made for one very specific person.
This one was for my mom. 💗
I knew I wanted something that felt like her — feminine without being overly sweet, traditional without being boring, and full of color and personality. I landed on a combination of soft pinks, leafy greens, and rich chocolate browns, and from there, the quilt really started to take on a life of its own.
The fabrics were a mix of florals, paisleys, and small coordinating prints. I wish I could tell you exactly what collections they came from, but this is one of those quilts where the fabric names have long since disappeared into the quilting abyss. 😂 At this point, I mostly remember them as - oh yeah…that quilt I made mom forever ago… haha.
All Aboard the Crazy Train 🚂
The pattern and piecing gave me Crazy Train vibes — a little unpredictable, a little chaotic, and somehow all of those pieces work together once you step back and look at the whole thing.
There are floral prints covered in roses, tiny coordinating prints, bold paisleys, and those gorgeous pops of pink and turquoise tucked throughout. The brown background gives everything a little grounding, while the pinks and greens keep it feeling light and happy.
And honestly, that's one of my favorite things about quilting.
You can put fabrics together that seem completely unrelated when they're sitting next to each other on the cutting table. Then you start piecing them together, and suddenly... there it is.
The magic happens somewhere between "I'm not sure about this" and "OH. I LOVE IT."
Made for Mom
I think there's something especially meaningful about making a quilt for your mom.
She's the person who has probably wrapped you up in blankets more times than you can count. The person who made sure you were warm, comfortable, and cared for long before you ever knew how much work that took.
So making a quilt for her feels a little like returning the favor.
I wanted this one to feel warm and familiar — the kind of quilt that could live at the end of her bed, get pulled over her legs on a chilly evening, or eventually become one of those quilts that carries a lifetime of memories simply because it was hers.
And while I don't remember the names of every fabric in this quilt, I don't really think that's what matters.
I remember who I made it for.
I remember choosing those pinks and greens and browns and thinking about Mom. I remember watching the quilt come together. And I remember that feeling you get when you finish something made completely by hand for someone you love.
That's the good stuff.
Because at the end of the day, a quilt doesn't have to be perfect. It doesn't have to have the newest fabric collection or the fanciest pattern.
Sometimes it just needs to say:
I made this for you.
I thought about you while I made it.
And I hope you love it as much as I do.
Made by Hand.
Meant to be Loved.
